From roughly 2007 to 2011 I dabbled in grassroots journalism very regularly, and I still jump at any opportunity to do this sort of work. I would have done it full time back then if it had paid my bills.
My focus was always on amplifying those voices that don't typically get emphasized, even in so-called "unbiased" reporting. Acting on the premise that unbiased reporting is about as likely as an unbiased human being, my journalistic approach has always been to ask questions of those most deeply affected by policymaking (or lack thereof) rather than give all the speech bubbles to policymakers themselves, who already have ample platforms from which to convey their message.
Who is most affected? What is their experience like? Why is this happening? What is at stake here? Who can be held accountable, and how? This is how I choose to dig deeper as a journalist.
